A useful Pokémon card value estimate starts with the correct card. The same Pokémon may appear in many sets, languages, rarities, and foil finishes, and each can have different market data. Once the printing is confirmed, compare a consistent price source and record when the estimate was observed.

Good habit: record the printing, finish, source, currency, and date together. If one of those is missing, treat the number as incomplete context.

1. Match the exact card printing

Confirm the card name, set, printed number, language, and release. A reprint can have the same name and artwork as an earlier card, but it is a different catalog entry. Japanese and English cards may also have different printings and release dates.

If a scanner suggests a match, compare it with the card in your hand before using its price. A scan can help narrow the search, but glare, similar artwork, and set variants can still make a result ambiguous. Search by printed number or set if the first result does not fit.

2. Check the finish and condition

Finish matters. A non-holo, holo, reverse holo, or special foil version may be listed separately or have different coverage. Confirm the shine pattern and any promo stamp instead of assuming that every copy with the same name has the same price.

Condition also changes what a buyer may pay. Many price references use standardized condition categories, while an individual card can have whitening, scratches, dents, or other wear. A phone scanner does not inspect all of that and cannot grade a card. Compare the guide’s assumptions with the physical card before using its estimate.

3. Keep the source and date visible

Market data can differ because services track different listings, products, regions, condition assumptions, and time windows. Use one source consistently when checking a trend, and note the date. Avoid combining amounts from different currencies or market definitions into a single total without converting and labeling them.

An asking price is not the same as a completed sale. A guide estimate is also not a guaranteed offer. If you are making a buying or selling decision, check current market activity and the actual condition of the card. Fees, shipping, taxes, and location can change the amount you receive.

4. Track a collection with the same rules

For a collection total, keep quantities and finishes accurate and use comparable estimates. A collection tool can save time by grouping cards, showing which entries have price coverage, and keeping a history of portfolio estimates. That history is still an estimate based on the market data available for each date; it does not include every real transaction or prove a collection’s sale value.

If an estimate is missing, don’t replace it with a guess. Mark the card as unpriced until a suitable reference is available. This keeps the total transparent and prevents the apparent value from changing simply because the data source changed.

How MewScan presents price context

MewScan currently uses available TCGplayer market data distributed through TCGCSV for price estimates and history. Coverage can vary by printing and finish, and selected-currency amounts depend on available exchange-rate data. MewScan’s portfolio view can show estimated value history from stored market observations; it is not a valuation, appraisal, investment recommendation, or sale offer.

Your saved cards remain in the device’s local collection. When the app requests price or portfolio history, it sends the card identifiers and finish details needed to return the relevant market data. MewScan does not upload the scan photo to identify a card. See the privacy policy for details.

A quick value-check checklist

  1. Confirm the card name, set, printed number, and language.
  2. Match the finish and account for the card’s condition.
  3. Read the source, currency, and observation date.
  4. Keep estimates separate from completed sales and your own purchase records.
  5. Leave unsupported printings unpriced rather than assuming a value.

Keep card identity and price history in one place. MewScan’s public store listings are not available yet.
